wy Dear Mr.Gether,
Dollar
Things no longer look well for the British
I enclose you copies of the telegraphic cor-
respondence between the India Office and the Calcutta
Mint.
At first they said they would coin at a
charge of one per cent naming $5,000,000 (5 million)
as the limit.
You will see by the later telegram that we
explained more clearly what we meant and they now re-
fuse tho' I gather they stand by an offer to coin
$5,000,000 (5 million) at one per cent
·
I do not know whether the Banks would be
willing to make a contract with the Calcutta Mint to take $5,000,000 (Five million) annually for any fixed
period.
I had a visit to-day from Mr.Noble of the HongKong and Shanghai Bank and I told him how the
matter stands.
It is useless to bring the subject before
Lord Herschell's Committee in its present state .
The Yen seems the only alternative
Yours sincerely
